Questions gardeners actually ask
Short, honest answers — with links to the full guides when you want the detail.

What is the easiest indoor plant to keep alive?
The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) tops our ranking. It tolerates low light and can go about a month without water. The snake plant is a close second. See the indoor ranking.
How often should I water houseplants?
Water when the top 3 cm of compost feels dry rather than on a fixed schedule. Most plants need about half as much water in winter as in summer, and overwatering kills far more plants than underwatering.
Which houseplants are safe for cats and dogs?
Spider plant, cast iron plant, parlour palm, Calathea, Peperomia and Hoya carnosa are listed as non-toxic by the ASPCA. Always contact a vet if a pet has eaten something worrying.
Do houseplants really purify the air?
Not meaningfully in a normal home. A 2019 Drexel University review of the original NASA research found you would need 10 to 1,000 plants per square metre to match ordinary ventilation.
What are the best drought-tolerant flowers?
Catmint, Geranium ‘Rozanne’, Salvia nemorosa, English lavender, sedum, sea holly and yarrow all survive dry summers once established. Full scores are in our easy-care guide.
Do drought-tolerant plants need watering at all?
Yes, during their first summer. Water deeply once a week until they are established, then only in prolonged, extreme drought.
What grows in dry shade under trees?
Geranium macrorrhizum, Epimedium and the male fern Dryopteris filix-mas are the most reliable. More in our shade guide.
When is the best time to plant perennials?
September and October in temperate climates, when the soil is still warm and autumn rain helps roots establish. Early spring is the second-best window. See the calendar.
How much weight can a balcony hold?
It varies by building. Ask your landlord or building manager for the load limit, place heavy pots near walls, and use lightweight containers and compost mixes.
